A successful job search may require no small amount of luck, and of course it never hurts to be standing in exactly the right place at the right time. But it's also necessary to get a strong grip on the more controllable aspects of the process that can help us get ahead. Start with the job search must-haves listed below.

Take out a pen and go through this process before you send another resume: 1) Write down your single most-important long-term goal. Where exactly would you like to be three years from today? 2) When you've clarified your goal, break that large goal down into a set of smaller goals. 3) Then break each smaller goal down into a series of actions. When you've done all this, start with the very first action on your list and start putting one foot in front of the other.

No matter how social or people oriented your industry or ideal position may be, the job search itself is a very social process. Sitting at home and anonymously skimming job boards all day will only get you so far. Reach for the phone, make real-world appointments with those who can help you, and start meeting with them so you can ask them for advice.

Flexibility means keeping a cool head and being ready to change plans at a moment's notice in the face of the unexpected. Resilience means bouncing back when things don't go your way. The job search will demand plenty of both. If you can scramble to prepare for last-minute interviews and smile in the face of rejection, you'll do fine.

You may encounter some bumps in the road, but if you stay the course and keep at it, you WILL find a job. Maybe not this week, maybe not even this month, but if a fruitful career is what you want, a fruitful career is what you will have. Be patient.
