LinkedIn has come into its own since 2002 when it was first introduced to the social media stage. In the last 14 years over 400 million people have joined the site worldwide.

What does that mean for you? Well this is your chance to connect with people all over the world on a professional platform. With these trusty tips you'll be able to show the world what you have to offer!

1) This isn't Facebook! Your profile should be completed and updated.
  • If your profile is unfinished and sparse, it speaks to your credibility. It can be damaging to the image that you are trying to portray, while making you appear careless and lacking follow through.
2) Professional platform calls for a professional picture!
  • LinkedIn is a professional site, so it's important to make sure that your profile picture portrays a professional you. Not the spring break you!
  • Your picture is the first image of you people look at, so this is your chance to put your best foot forward and look as sharp as you can.
3) Don't lie! It's that simple!
  • Never falsify information you put in your experience section.
  • Once you lose the trust of your audience, it becomes very difficult to have them follow you again.
4) Don't spam your connections!
  • NEVER send unsolicited messages through LinkedIn.
  • Spam is pretty clear and we know it when we get it, so don't send it to others.
5) Don't be negative!
  • Never post negative, emotionally-controversial or shocking comments. You can go to Facebook for that!
  • Remain professional at all times!
Joining LinkedIn is an opportunity to become a part of a global discussion, and a platform to push your career or business to the next step. Remember this isn't a free for all, remain professional at all times, and good luck!
